Martin Venezky
Born in 1957, Venezky received his BA from Dartmouth College and his MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art. Worked at Speak Magazine as the Art Director. In 1997 he started the Appetite Engineers, a small design firm that self describes to "create and reflect the world around us" in San Francisco. He spends a chunk of his time teaching as an associate professor at California College of the Arts. He's taught at some other places to like the California Institute of Art, Art Center College of Design, and RISD.
Venezky was once called the "king of chaos" in an interview. He describes his work as rambunctious and jubilant – but not chaotic.
There is a lot to see and comprehend, but there is logical flow and order that is there.
He has expressed the melancholy is a motivation for his process.
"melancholy is a motivation for the processes I employ, rather than the feeling expressed by the end product. Collecting discarded ephemera, working with delicate materials and anticipating the inevitable unraveling of my surroundings—these are all aspects of my process and my need to create. But I wouldn’t expect anyone to decipher that from looking at the work itself."
His work seems to draw from the world around him, if I interpret this quote right. A lot of his work has a collage element to it that I find intriguing, combining various elements together into a final piece. Layers upon layers add visual depth. Collage can be eye candy and it can make people think. I find it to be remarkably simple and incredibly difficult all at the same time.
I particularly like this that he says –
"I’ve always been an interior sort. That is, I’m used to looking at the world as a somewhat misinformed observer—curious but unsure, preferring to look through a window rather than walk through a door. That has given me a lot of time to think about how the world gets stitched together, and to examine and poke at the structures beneath the spectacle."
Venezky's design practice depicts a bustling and alive environment.
From my observation, reading and looking at images of designs attributed to Venezky on google and on various websites, he creates things that at first view look chaotic and thrown together. In all actuality, they are well thought out and made with purpose, every decision made with a reason.
seriously. I love collage. And this:
This is collage. And cats. Perfection.
And print is my favorite thing in the design world.
This implies that he thinks it's still alive! He's number one in my book.
Now, we're talking food.
Pizza? Of course he made an illustration out of pizza labels. Cause he knows collaging labels of one of the greatest food items ever is a brilliant idea.
Uh, yes.
It's like you know me, guys.
In all seriousness, I find Martin really intriguing. I think the Step Q&A article I read was particularly interesting in talking about his design and how he thinks. I lot of what he said in that interview resonated with me – I feel very similar about how I view the world and how I interpret my own personality. He creates work that captures my attention. I'm still trying to figure out why, and that's going to be fun.
