poster updates

I chose to explore what it might look like to combine the two concepts that I had at the end of class. I explored some new colors for duotones – these are three that I like, as well as the first color choices. I didn't pick anything that used a different text hierarchy in terms of size, but I wanted to explore some potential differences with color and boxes used around the type as well as where the type falls in place on each poster.

Concept(?) – through the means of analog collage and digital manipulation, my poster is made to reflect how process affects a final design outcome. It is meant to be fun and energetic, layered with different ideas of what process and trying new things looks like in the creation process.

final infograph

My final info graph dealt with the relationship between cities and the food resources within each city's boundary. I used three sets of data that related to the city – square mileage, population, and median income – and three sets of data about available food – pharmacies, grocery stores, and restaurants. I think that each city's individual circle diagram is successful. It provides an interesting way to compare this data next to each other. I think a place that it suffers is how each circle relates to the other circles. I struggled with how to show them in relation to each other. Right now I feel as though they are a little arbitrarily placed, with no real reason other than it goes in a general 'large to small' order from top to bottom.

type poster explorations

the final timeline

In an attempt to focus on the lyrics of Sufjan Stevens, I focused on creating the lyrics by hand to create a sense of originality and authenticity. The lyrics are capable of evoking feelings, different for every person. There is a level of interpretation left up to the viewer. Under my interpretation, these are lyrics that bring back memories and a feeling of nostalgia – things that I won't necessarily be able to every truly relive. There is a fleeting sense to them. The pictures are treated in a fashion that is meant to represent this fleeting nature, still there, but sometimes hard to discern.

type and stuff

data research

I attempted to find data based on grocery stores in defined neighborhoods compared to the population density of these neighborhoods. I also looked to see whether or not these small suburbs had some kind of restaurant population as well as if they had pharmacies (CVS, Walgreens - in-store pharmacies didn't count) as other places to obtain some potentially healthy nutrition

The Argentine - 3.973 square miles; pop. 10,331; 1 grocery store within the defined area; 4 restaurants; 0 pharmacies
Roeland Park - 1.62 square miles; pop. 6,816; 2 grocery stores within the defined area; 8 restaurants; 2 pharmacies
Overland Park - 56.7 square miles; pop. 178,919; 12 major grocery stores within the defined area; 362 restaurants; 7 pharmacies
Mission - 2.53 square miles; pop. 9,467; 2 grocery stores within the defined area; 36 restaurants; 1 pharmacy
Turner - 5.339 square miles; pop. 11,154; 0 grocery stores within the defined area; 7 restaurants; 1 pharmacy
Rosedale - 1.918 square miles; pop. 8,437; 1 grocery; 16 restaurants; 1 pharmacy

exploration process (thus far)

I only had two things postable at this point. I'm working on some analog stuff right now that I wasn't able to finish before class was over. I included a poor quality photo of some ideas of different things to do. They are as follows:
Digital collage
Analog collage with type and image
Analog collage with image, utilizing digital type
B&W sketch paired with color
Blocks of images, patterns, colors, and type
